How long should a slideshow song be? A guide for every occasion
May 16, 2026 · 4 min read
The song is the spine of the slideshow. Pick the right length and the whole thing feels effortless. Pick the wrong length and you're either rushing through photos or staring at a black screen wondering when the music ends. Here's the right song length for every occasion — and what to do when your perfect song doesn't fit.
Sweet spot by occasion
Funeral / memorial: 3:30–4:30. Long enough to honor each photo, short enough that the audience stays present in their grief. Wedding reception: 5:00–7:00 total (often two songs). Long enough to cover childhood, dating, and engagement chapters without rushing. Milestone birthday: 4:00–6:00. One song for a 40th, often two for a 60th or 70th where there's more life to cover. Graduation: 4:00–5:30. One song that matches the grad's personality — sentimental for one kid, upbeat for another. Baby first year: 3:00–4:00. A short, sweet arc. Don't try to fit the whole year into seven minutes.
When the perfect song is too long
Most music software (and Emberframe) lets you trim a song at the start, end, or both. The two best places to cut: 1. Cut the intro. Many songs have 20–40 seconds of instrumental buildup before the vocals come in. If the song is long, you can usually drop the first verse or the first instrumental section entirely and start at the chorus or second verse. 2. Fade out early. Pick the natural emotional peak of the song (usually a final chorus) and fade out there, even if there are 60 more seconds of outro. Audiences feel the ending — they don't notice that the song was "supposed" to be longer.
When the perfect song is too short
Two options: 1. Use two songs. Pick a complementary second song and transition between them. Works beautifully for weddings (one song for childhood, one for the couple together). 2. Slow down the photos. If you have 40 photos and a 2:30 song, hold each photo for 4 seconds instead of 6. The slideshow ends on the right note even though the average photo time is shorter. Don't pad the slideshow with photos you don't love just to fill the song. Quality over quantity always wins.
